£1 Million Funding to Develop AI-Powered Teacher Tools for Feedback and Marking

Students across the UK are poised to benefit from enhanced teaching quality and increased teacher-student interaction as the Government commits to embedding AI into education. This initiative, part of the larger Plan for Change, aims to break down barriers to opportunity and accelerate societal growth.

Revolutionizing Teacher Workflows with AI

A £1 million fund has been awarded to 16 ed-tech developers to create AI tools designed to streamline teacher workloads by automating marking and providing detailed, tailored feedback. These innovations aim to free up teachers' time, enabling them to focus on inspiring and educating students directly.

This announcement follows the Prime Minister’s recent outline of a vision to leverage AI for national renewal—propelling economic growth and transforming public services. Evidence consistently shows that high-quality feedback significantly boosts student performance. However, the time-intensive nature of marking has long been a challenge for educators.

Tailored Tools for Every Classroom

The new AI tools will cater to various age groups and subjects, from evaluating handwritten English essays to providing feedback on geography diagrams. With developers projecting time savings of up to 50% in formative assessments, these tools promise to revolutionize teaching practices.

For instance, AI could analyze handwritten assignments, deliver individual feedback instantly, and identify common errors in math exercises, helping teachers plan targeted lessons for the next day. Importantly, the tools will always retain teacher oversight, blending AI efficiency with expert judgment.

Driving Excellence in Education

Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education, emphasized:

"High-quality teaching is the cornerstone of raising standards in schools. By harnessing AI, we’re empowering teachers to focus on what they do best—teaching—while providing students with a cutting-edge education experience."

The prototype tools, set for development by April 2025, will rely on a pioneering AI content store, funded with £3 million from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. This world-first resource will aggregate curriculum guidance, lesson plans, and anonymized student work, ensuring the AI tools generate accurate and reliable content.

Transforming Public Services Through AI

Peter Kyle, Technology Secretary, noted:

"AI has the potential to revolutionize education, allowing teachers to dedicate their time to teaching. By supporting 16 UK innovators, we’re not only enhancing education but also making AI-driven progress a hallmark of our public services."

These innovations align with the Government’s broader strategy to modernize public sector data use, improving outcomes for communities nationwide.

The Role of AI in the Classroom

A survey by TeacherTapp revealed nearly half of teachers already use AI tools. However, most are not specifically tailored to the English education system, limiting their effectiveness. By training AI on the dedicated content store, feedback accuracy can rise to 92%—a significant improvement from 67% with generic data.

Pioneering Innovation in Education

One of the funded companies, Summatic, co-founded by Daniel Appleby, is developing a tool to transform feedback for maths students aged 16-19. This platform will identify learning gaps, generate unlimited practice questions, and improve outcomes while reducing teacher workloads.

Appleby commented:

"This funding is a milestone in our mission to deliver equitable learning outcomes across the UK while alleviating teachers' administrative burdens."

With AI shaping the future of education, these tools represent a crucial step toward creating a more efficient, equitable, and inspiring learning environment.
