TikTok Unveils New Feature for Labeling AI-Generated Content

TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform, is rolling out an innovative feature aimed at enhancing transparency regarding the creation of content utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) tools. While users had previously noticed this feature in action, TikTok officially announced it in a recent blog post.

TikTok has long maintained guidelines that mandate creators to disclose when AI tools are employed in content production. The new feature takes this transparency a step further, proactively prompting creators to activate the labeling feature. When activated, this feature ensures viewers are informed when videos and images have been generated using AI software. The AI label discreetly appears beneath the username in the corner of videos. Additionally, the prompt serves as a reminder that failure to disclose the involvement of AI tools could result in the removal of content. TikTok is also planning to initiate tests this week to automatically label AI-generated content.

AI-generated content has been on the rise across various platforms, and TikTok is no exception. This content is created both by users and the platform itself. Examples include AI voice cloning software generating viral content, such as remarkably convincing faux Drake songs or fabricated Taylor Swift pep talks, amassing millions of views.

In a notable move, TikTok, in March, released a face filter called Bold Glamour, which exhibited a level of seamlessness and realism previously unseen in similar features. However, TikTok had not officially confirmed its use of AI to power this effect. Now, in an effort to bolster transparency, the company has committed to renaming effects that utilize AI tools, ensuring "AI" is included in their names. Furthermore, creators of such effects will be required to follow suit, aligning with TikTok's commitment to transparently inform its user base about AI involvement in content creation.
